(Yicai Global) April 14 -- In a new round of organizational change, Alibaba Cloud President Ren Geng has reportedly quit the fast-growing company and has been replaced by Vice President Huang Haiqing.
Huang has taken the reins at the cloud computing and artificial intelligence unit of Alibaba Group Holding, online news outlet Leiphone reported yesterday, citing company insiders. A number of mid-level and senior managers have also resigned recently, according to the report.
Huang previously worked at Dell Technologies, International Business Machines, Oracle, Tencent Cloud Computing, and Shanghai-based data manager Datatom.
Ren, who had a management ranking of six in Alibaba's 10-level system, became president in December 2018, and had been reporting since last month to Cai Yinghua, a level seven executive. Ren joined Alibaba in 2015 after working for Huawei Technologies.
The latest senior personnel change is just the beginning, insiders told Leiphone. As Cai and Huang consolidate their positions more executives may join the Hangzhou-based company from outside, which will bring a new round of structural and business change, they said.
Huang emphasized two points at a management meeting on April 12. First, sales should focus on self-developed high-quality products, and second, Alibaba Cloud should attach greater importance to profit.
Alibaba Cloud and its office communications platform DingTalk reported a 20 percent gain in revenue to USD19.5 billion in the final quarter of 2021 from a year earlier, reflecting robust growth in the financial and telecoms sectors, according to the firm’s quarterly earnings report.
