(Yicai Global) May 9 -- China Film Group’s shares jumped by their daily trading limit after the movie distributor and producer of hit science fiction series The Wandering Earth reportedly said it will build a Chinese sci-fi movie theme park in Beijing.

China Film [SHA: 600977] jumped 10 percent to close at CNY18.28 (USD2.64) today. The stock has gained 34 percent so far this year.

China Film aims to add the theme park to its innovative businesses roadmap, Chairman Fu Ruoqing said at a press conference yesterday, according to a report by The Paper today.

The Wandering Earth films, based on the novels of Liu Cixin, are China’s most popular sci-fi intellectual property, according to the report.

“The movies boast very strong cross-sectoral extensibility and can spur consumption that isn’t just limited to box office takings,” Fu added.

The Wandering Earth II, mainly produced by Beijing-based China Film, broke 32 records on its premiere and became one of China's top-10 highest-grossing movies, earning over CNY4 billion (USD577.7 million). Its merchandise has also sold well, with model sales topping 300,000, Fu said.

China Film's revenue soared 53 percent to CNY1.5 billion (USD208.7 million) in the three months ended March 31 from a year earlier, according to its first-quarter earnings report released on April 25. Net profit surged 57 percent to CNY182 million (USD26.3 million).
