(Yicai Global) April 16 -- Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo announced it will spare homosexual subject matter from its purge of offensive content after an online uproar spurred it to backtrack from its earlier stance, saying the clean-up mainly targets smut, violence and gore, not gay themes.

Weibo, owned by Sina Corp., announced on April 13 that to further create a clean and harmonious community environment per China’s Cybersecurity Law and regulations, it would conduct a three-month purge of illegal comics, games, and short videos, targeting those involving pornography, violence and homosexuality.

The about-face is a sign of China’s shifting social mores and greater willingness to address formerly taboo subjects.

State media People’s Daily also argued yesterday that sexual orientation takes more than one form and homosexuality is not a mental disease.
