(Yicai Global) April 12 -- Pony Ma, founder of WeChat operator Tencent Holdings Ltd., aims to transform his firm into a digital assistant serving companies spanning various industries to help with the achievement of digital transformation.
“Tencent’s positioning is to do something but not everything,” Ma said at the 2018 China Internet Plus Digital Economy Summit held in Chongqing today. “Our goal is not to infiltrate every trade and industry but to act as a digital assistant for every trade and industry,” he added.
Tencent currently focuses on three areas, namely connections, tools and ecology, Ma said. The Shenzhen-based firm aims to plays the role of a connector, providing interfaces for all industries to enter the digital world, while providing a comprehensive toolbox for firms and simultaneously becoming part of a community that builds digital ecosystems.
Referring to Tencent’s moves into the consumer sector, seen in investments made over the past year, Ma stressed that the firm aims to provide the sector with a helping hand rather than becoming an outright retailer.
From the realization of China’s second-biggest third-party payment platform, WeChat Pay, to the development of smart retail solutions, Tencent has provided aids for retailers to achieve a closed loop system for the online and offline sales of goods, as well as advertising and marketing, he added.
“Merchants can optimize store locations and shelf displays by analyzing consumer purchasing behaviors, and they can actually personalize promotions by importing location-based advertising services, pushing content via WeChat public accounts, and selling products via WeChat Mini Programs, and offering coupons,” Ma said.
The company will also soon introduce a smart store developed jointly with supermarket operator Better Life Investment Group Co, he revealed.
