(Yicai Global) May 14 -- Serbia fully supports China’s One Belt, One Road initiative and looks forward to working with the nation to build roads, railways and inland waterways, China News Service quoted Serbian Ambassador to China Milan Bacevic as saying.
“The high-speed railway link between Belgrade and Budapest, Hungary is a paragon of cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative,” the ambassador said. “The project is progressing as planned in Serbia.”
The two countries penned an agreement on the construction of a modern high-speed rail link between the two capital cities in 2015. Once complete, the Serbia-Hungary line will become a ‘European corridor’ for China.
Bacevic believes China’s Hebei Iron and Steel Group’s acquisition of Serbian Zelezara Smederevo d.o.o.’s plant last year substantially boosted Serbia’s economy. After the success of the deal, Serbia hopes to attract more Chinese investors and companies to invest in the country.
“We hope to learn from China’s experience in the e-commerce and financial sectors,” Bacevic continued. “This experience will be vital to Serbia’s economic development and social stability. Chinese firms have set an example for us.”
The ambassador is working to introduce Serbia as a travel destination to Chinese tourists and hopes there will be direct flights between the two countries available in the near future. Since January, Chinese citizens with a valid passport have been able to stay in Serbia for up to 30 days without a visa for travel, business or family purposes.
“I believe both China and Serbia are aware that they will not only become political and economic partners but also see steadily growing cooperation in interpersonal, culture and education fields,” Bacevic added.
