(Yicai Global) April 24 -- China’s communist-aligned news agency Global Times has put to bed speculation that Abbot Shi Yongxin of the renowned Shaolin Temple sanctified Chinese rocket launch pads as the nation celebrated its Aerospace Day today.
The monk and his congregation did visit the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology today, but they were eying an advanced system for the protection of ancient books, according to the Global Times. The Shaolin Temple’s scripture library is home to a host of books, many made from bamboo paper, which could benefit from the technology as some miss pages or have been damaged by insects over time.
The temple is a world-famous tourist attraction and it is difficult to carry out protection work, but the technologies developed by the academy, which include a protective box and a digital air distribution and monitoring system, may resolve the issue.
The box’s design uses space technologies, such as pneumatic heating and honeycomb structures, Fan Xinzhong, director of the structural division under the academy’s tactical weaponry department and the box’s designer.
“We need to consider many factors,” said co-designer Dan Yijiao. “Fireproofing, waterproofing and pest control are the most basic requirements.” In the event of a fire, the insulating material the box is made of can guarantee the internal temperature will remain at less than 60 degrees Celsius for one hour. The honeycomb structure also protects the box under high pressure and prevents it from sinking.
