(Yicai Global) Aug. 23 -- Stock markets on the Chinese mainland opened near flat this morning as investors remained unsure which direction the markets are headed.

The Shanghai Composite Index opened 0.06 percent higher at 2,885.15, while the Shenzhen Component Index started up 0.07 percent at 9,357.29. The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth enterprises listed in Shenzhen, began the day 0.07 percent stronger at 1,614.54.
