(Yicai Global) Sept. 21 -- The Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS), an international organization promoting peace and prosperity in China, Japan, and South Korea, expects to publish the first trilingual Chinese dictionary developed by the three countries by the end of this year, state-owned Xinhua News Agency reported.

The countries have now completed confirmation work on entries for the publication and have also integrated definitions. Half of the required editing work is now complete.

The dictionary lists 658 shared Chinese characters, which are explained in Chinese, Japanese and Korean along with pronunciations, their meanings in each country, and practical examples. No other characters appear in the publication.

It will be the first trilingual dictionary to cover the trio’s three languages, making it different to traditional bilingual dictionaries, such as Chinese-Japanese, Chinese-Korean, or Korean-Japanese references, said Yoshio Koyama, commissioner of social and cultural affairs at the TCS. It is also the first dictionary compiled by scholars from the three countries.

The dictionary will see definitions translated into two different languages, which doesn’t happen in traditional dictionaries, he added.

Authorities and scholars will promote the publication through marketing activities in all three countries. It may also be made into a mobile app.
