(Yicai Global) June 4 -- The only A-class international film festival in China, the Shanghai International Film Festival, SIFF, will raise the curtain this month on the best examples of the world’s fastest growing film market along with examples of the world cinema.

The Shanghai Film Festival is also the largest film event with the most categories of competition in Asia. The 21st edition of the SIFF will be held from June 16 to June 25.

Some 45 movie theatres in Shanghai will screen nearly 500 Chinese and foreign films during the course of the festival. Such films as Shoplifters, the winner of the Golden Palm Award, and Cold War, the winner of the best director award in the 71st Cannes Film Festival, will please movie buffs during the highly-anticipated Shanghai Film Festival.

The opening film is a Chinese movie, “Animal World,” directed by the young director HanYan, starred by Li Yifeng with Michael Douglas as the guest actor. In the main category of competition for Golden Goblet Award, the first series of selected feature films will see eight movies competing including Chinese director Lv Yue’s Lost, Found.

The documentary film category has shortlisted five movies including Crime and Punishment. The animated film category has strong contenders including Magical Circus, a Chinese, British, Spanish co-production.

The award ceremony for the 21st Shanghai Film Festival will be held on June 24.

Well-known Chinese actor Jiang Wen will preside over the main competition jury for Golden Goblet Award. The other jury members include Taiwanese actor Zhang Zhen, Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi, Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglu, Japanese director Naomi Kawase, American producer David Permut and Chinese actress Qin Hailu.
